MMS Director Johnnie Burton
to Address
Oceanology International
Americas 2003 Conference in New Orleans
Minerals Management Service (MMS) Director Johnnie Burton will be a keynote speaker at the Oceanology International Americas 2003 Conference underway this week in New Orleans at the Morial Convention Center. She will address the conference on offshore energy, science, and technology at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 5.
Oceanology International Americas runs June 4–6; it is a leading marine science and ocean technology conference bringing together all sides of industry, science, research, and academia. The program features a broad range of presentations on marine science, technology, operational oceanography, policy, and education. The audience includes a broad-based cross-section of the science and technology community involved in offshore oil and gas exploration and production, navigation, oceanographic research, remote sensing applications, coastal zone management, marine civil engineering, marine environmental sciences, fisheries and natural products, meteorology, national security, ports and harbors, marine survey, and hydrography.
Registration is free and includes access to the various sessions, as well as to the exhibit hall where poster sessions are held and exhibits are on display. Exhibitors from academia, the federal government, and many national and international companies are on hand to showcase their research and answer questions. The MMS exhibit features information about offshore energy development and production, new technology, and MMS-funded environmental studies.
MMS is the Federal agency in the U.S. Department of the Interior that manages the nation's oil, natural gas, and other mineral resources on the Outer Continental Shelf in Federal offshore waters. The agency also collects, accounts for, and disburses mineral revenues from Federal and American Indian leases. These revenues totaled over $6 billion in 2002 and nearly $127 billion since the agency was created in 1982. Annually, nearly $1 billion from those revenues go into the Land and Water Conservation Fund for the acquisition and development of state and Federal park and recreation lands.
