Minerals Management Service Presents Kerr-McGee with Conservation Award for Respecting the Environment

The Interior Department's Minerals Management Service (MMS) has selected Kerr-McGee Corp. as the 1998 recipient of the Conservation Award for Respecting the Environment (CARE Award).

Hammond Eve, MMS's Regional Supervisor for Leasing and Environment, presented the award to Luke R. Corbett, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Kerr-McGee Corp., in New Orleans today.

Kerr-McGee Oil and Gas Corp., a wholly owned subsidiary of Kerr-McGee Corp., is being commended for its proactive approach to environmental issues through the implementation of several programs that result in energy conservation, product stewardship, waste reduction, and pollution prevention.  Participation in these programs instills an environmental ethic throughout the company and demonstrates Kerr-McGee’s leadership and commitment to go beyond minimum standards and common practices.

Eve cited Kerr-McGee’s extraordinary commitment to pollution prevention by implementing a proactive waste management program throughout 200 offshore facilities, a program that focuses on continual environmental improvements, encourages on-site innovation, and stresses accountability and resourcefulness.  He also noted Kerr-McGee’s willingness to build working partnerships with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Environmental Protection Agency, the Louisiana and Texas artificial reef programs, the Center for Marine Conservation, and others to protect and enhance the environmental quality and recreational potential of the air, land, beaches, and offshore waters directly affected by its coastal and offshore operations.  As the Gulf of Mexico’s first offshore operator and neighbor to some of America’s most sensitive natural resources (Breton National Wildlife Refuge and Wilderness Area, Flower Gardens National Marine Sanctuary), Kerr-McGee has effectively demonstrated that energy development and environmental stewardship can be mutually supportive.

The CARE Award, established in 1987 and presented annually by the MMS Gulf of Mexico OCS Region, was designed to recognize and commend outstanding actions and accomplishments by those private companies engaged in offshore energy development and that support the broader conservation and environmental goals of the Department of the Interior, coastal States, and the Nation.

For more information on the CARE Award Program, contact Villere Reggio, the MMS CARE Award Coordinator, at (504) 736-2780.

The MMS is the Federal agency that manages the Nation’s oil and gas and other mineral resources on the OCS and collects, accounts for and last year disbursed about $6 billion in revenues from Federal offshore leases and Federal and Indian onshore mineral leases.
