Description: Background: Satellite remote sensing makes it possible
to conduct surveillance on large areas of the world’s oceans for natural
conditions and changes related to human activities. Plankton biomass, chlorophyll
concentrations, colored dissolved organic material, suspended sediments, and
water clarity are all indicators used in various ways to describe the water
quality condition. In river-dominated
areas such as coastal |

Objectives: The objectives of this study are to:
Methods: Ocean color satellite data will be obtained
from National Aeronautics and |
Products: Products to be delivered to MMS include quarterly status letters, a final report and a PowerPoint slide presentation. |
Importance to MMS: The MMS will used the findings of this project to better understand the capabilities of ocean color remote sensing to characterize variability of Mississippi River water and its influences in the northern Gulf of Mexico. |
Current Status: A Linux-based system has been acquired. Cruises were conducted in April 2007 and 2008. Stations were sampled for water column optical properties, colored dissolved organic material (CDOM), and chlorophyll. Software to process the SeaWiFS satellite ocean color data set was written. |
