 Tips for Applying

1.  You may apply for a vacancy announcement by completing an OF-612, or a resume.

2.  Read the vacancy announcement carefully.

  • Major duties - includes a description of the position.

  • Qualifications Required - taken from  the X-118. Selective Factor(s) are qualifying for the position.

  • Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics - give examples of how you possess these.  May include selective  factor(s).

  • Include all required forms (e.g. SF-50, DD-214 transcript).

  • Closing Date.

3.  Completing your application.

  • List all positions you believe are qualifying beginning with the most recent.  Include title, series and grade (if Federal), and timeframe (month and year).  If you held the same position but at different grades, be sure to indicate the time periods at the different grade levels and the duties you performed at the various grade levels.  State how many hours per week you worked.  Additional credit is not given for over 40 hours but part-time work is credited based upon the number of hours you worked.

  • If you performed duties that were unusual for a position, state the number of hours per week you performed those duties. (e.g., a secretary performing duties that could be credited to an accounting technician).

  • Include volunteer experience you believe may be qualifying for the position.  Be sure to include the amount of time you performed the duties (e.g., 5 hours per week for 2 years).

  • Include details or temporary promotions you may have served.  Include timeframes.

  • Include education that may be qualifying for the position.  Include transcripts if you are qualifying for the position.  Include transcripts if you are qualifying based on education or have not held the same type of position in the Federal service (e.g., geologist applying for a geophysicist position).

  • For positions that require a qualified typist, include proof of typing proficiency if you have not held a Federal  position that required a qualified typist in the past.

4.  Knowledges, Abilities, Skills, and Other Characteristics (KASOC’s)

While not required, it is usually advantageous to address each KASOC individually.  Give examples of experiences or education that demonstrate you possess the particular KASOC.  You may repeat some of the information you have provided in your resume.

5.  References

Provide name, address and telephone number of individuals who can verify the work you have performed.
